It was another boring night at Two Chefs. The restaurant was so dark I couldn’t even see what I was eating. Normally I push the oil lamp to the far edge of the table, but tonight I needed it. Oh well.

I started with the mixed field greens salad with green beans, halved cherry tomatoes, lemon vinaigrette dressing, and a house-made sourdough breadstick which I never eat. Then I ordered somewhat off menu with the marina of seafood (clams, shrimp and salmon) that’s normally served by itself but I had it with linguine. It was the second time I’ve done that and it was delicious. And boring old me finished with the usual scoop of chocolate and vanilla ice cream with a triple espresso con leche.

I’m finally going to a different place tomorrow. Maybe.

I had a nice chat with Alan and his wife; it’s embarrassing that I can never remember her name, but I am so forgetful when it comes to names.

I am so tired of Two Chefs, but given the situation at Captain’s Tavern, and considering there aren’t many places near me that will let me stay for several hours, I’m kind of stuck with them. I need to call some of the restaurants in the downtown Coral Gables area to see if they’ll put up with me. I know Seasons 52 does and I need to go there more often.

Tonight was my usual appetizer night. I had baby back ribs with spiked orange glaze and house-made potato chips; the chips were soggy and the ribs were overcooked. Lump house-made crab cake with forest mushrooms, onions and chipotle mayonnaise; there were a lot of shells in the crab cake which I mentioned to Oscar. One scoop each of chocolate and vanilla ice cream with a triple espresso con leche.

It was a quiet night at Two Chefs. Got to chat with the Judge and his wife Ann, but otherwise just read the Times and Post, and finished my newest book, The Heartland: An American History.

Dinner tonight was their so-called “classic” Caesar salad with sourdough crouton and Swiss cheese. Despite the misnomer it’s a good salad. Tuna steak with spätzle and pesto. Bittersweet chocolate souffle with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a triple espresso con leche.

The new hair salon next to Two Chefs had their grand opening tonight including an extremely loud outdoor DJ.

Mixed field greens with green beans, cherry tomatoes, lemon vinaigrette dressing, and a house-made breadstick. Cheeseburger with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and a side of house-made potato chips. One scoop each of chocolate and vanilla ice cream plus a triple espresso con leche.

Saw two people I know tonight. The Judge and his wife plus my friend Alan and his wife. I hadn’t seen the latter for a few weeks because they mostly go to Captain’s Tavern and I can’t bring myself to eat there anymore because they’ve been closed by the health department three times so far this year.

Yellow Fin tuna tartare with hand-cut potato chips and yellow pepper sauce. Bacon-wrapped meatloaf with bacon-wrapped asparagus and steamed broccoli. Pistachio souffle with vanilla ice cream and a triple espresso con leche.

The place was mildly busy tonight, but I didn’t see anyone I knew so I had a quiet dinner of reading the NYT.

Crab cake plated on sauteed forest mushrooms and onions, topped with chipotle sauce. Shrimp & fettuccine pasta with roasted tomatoes, basil and garlic. One scoop each of vanilla and chocolate ice cream with a triple espresso con leche.

Saturday nights are my appetizer nights, but I wasn’t very hungry so I only had two appetizers instead of the usual three.

I still managed to spend three hours there reading the NYT and my latest book, “The Heartland: An American History” by Kristin L. Hoganson.

Steak tartare with french fries. Fried pork rinds with chipotle sauce. Pistachio souffle with vanilla ice cream and a triple espresso con lechce.

“Classic” Caesar salad with Swiss cheese. It’s not classic, but it is very good.

New York strip steak with escargot Bolognese and steak fries. Asked for a rare-plus steak and got medium-well instead. The fries were and always are amazing.

My “classic” dessert of a triple espresso con leche and a scoop each of vanilla and chocolate ice cream.

Sat at the bar after dinner playing Wordscapes for 20 minutes, all to help someone else rack-up some points and ever higher levels. It’s a fun game, but I’m only on level 104 while they’re at 195.

Did I mention that screaming babies at a fancy restaurant are annoying? They are.

It was very slow tonight and while I doubt Jan was happy about the slow night, I relished in the relative quietness of the place. In all the years I’ve been eating here, tonight was the first time I tried one of their flat bread pizzas. It will also be the last time I try one of their pizza. Why? Because they aren’t sauced. Everything else was as good as it always it.
